Workaday Blues

Music and lyrics by Vance Lehmkuhl
From the album, "Garden Variety"

I wake up and scratch myself and yawn
Another workday greets me with the dawn
My cubicle seems so dull and gray
And everything's the same, every lonely day
I guess I gotta play these cards,
But sometimes it seems so hard...

It's not as if this calls for any skill
A little walking, a little talking, a lot of sitting still
My interest in this job has dropped to nil
If the boredom doesn't kill me, the snack foods will
I guess it's just dumb luck
But somehow I got stuck
Working for the management,
For the man, for the management

I see 'em talking, the guys who run the place
Why don't they come over and say it to my face?
I'm feeling disrespected, feeling trapped
My predecessor here one day just snapped
I guess it's better than being dead
But I hope I don't lose my head
Working for the management,
For the man, for the management

It could be worse - my cousin works in science
An industry that suffers no defiance
He can't get up to get a glass of freakin' water
He spoke out, he was threatened with slaughter
He told me,
I don't remember any dotted line,
But sometime, I must have signed
Up to serve the management,
To serve the man, and now I'm
Working for the management,
For the man, for the management

I look across the zoo and see you all in cages
With children of all ages on circus stages
No matter how loud any of us rages
We're never gonna receive our rightful wages
I guess it's just fate
But lord knows I sure do hate
Working for the management,
For the man, for the management
